SUYAM camp for Nagai kids, teachers
Suyam has organised a 4-day camp for the children, volunteers and the teachers of Nagapattanam in Chennai from May 12, 2005.
This camp will be attended by about 120 children and 30 volunteers and teachers. The children belong to the primary schools in Nagapattanam. The central idea around conducting this 4-day camp was to emphasise " education with recreation" -- four days of play-school creativity with education.
The volunteers here are the local community youngsters who have been working hard on various SUYAM`s projects at Nagapattinam and areas around the district. They are one among SUYAM now. During the camp, these volunteers would be taught and trained personally. Among the aspects would be "teaching through puppet show and miming", besides basic computer skills.
Young, unemployed woman graduates, in someway affected by tsunami, have taken up the following at
Nagapattanam.
1. Tuition centre (which helps the slow learners-students)
2. activity centre (which is to bring the drop-outs back to school and increase their level of interests in education) and
3. summer camp (for young children to continue their education and creative interests during summer holidays).
These teachers will be trained in computers and taught new methods of imparting education to children. Use of multi-media would be made familiar to these teachers which would in turn help them to attract students at the activity
centre.
For the children
And for the children the four days are packed with activities. On the day of arrival on 12th May, they would spend almost an entire day at various places in Chennai, learning and seeing different things. Some of the proposed places are Birla Planetarium and Guindy children`s park.
After a couple of hours of rest, they would have a few classes in the evening. The programmes for children include
1. Basic pranic healing course - which helps the children in Character Building.
2. Humour show
3. Basic training in swimming and karate, and other activites aimed at making children physically active and mentally alert.
5. Dignitaries with special interest in children would address them on various issues.
6. The children would be trained to get rid of their inhibitions, be bold and pro-active. They will be taught necessary interpersonal skills to get going in a group. The aim is to inculcate good moral values in children where each of them would care and share, would have empathy for their fellow mates.
