Madras University to start 5 new courses
The new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras, Prof S Ramachandran, has said the university plans to start five new centres for population studies, herbal science, environmental sciences, ocean management and an institute for infrastructural studies.
Prof Ramachandran, who took charge from the outgoing Vice-Chancellor S P Thiagarajan September 6, 2006, in Chennai, said, "I plan to start an institute for insfrastructural studies which will help in developing the infrastructure of highways, railways, ports and airports."
He said he had spoken to Union Minister of State for Railways R Velu and Union Highways Minister T R Baalu about this.
"I myself have projects for Rs 2 crore in Ocean Management. The World Bank is funding a coastal zone management project for Rs 500 crore, of which it has allocated Rs 100 crore for research," he said, adding that he would prepare a report about the Institute of Ocean Technology to get as much funds as possible.
Prof Ramachandran also said he would look into the differences prevailing between the management and the various unions of the university.
