Anna
University and the National Association for Applications of Radioisotopes
and Radiation in Industry (NAARRI), Indian Nuclear Society - Kalpakkam Branch
(INS-K) and Qunest Foundation are organising an awareness programme about
advancements and applications of radioisotopes and radiation technologies from
July 13 to 16 at Anna
University, Chennai.
University Vice-Chancellor, Dr
E Balagurusamy, says about 20 reputed scientists from the Board of Radiation
and Isotope Technology (BRIT), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai,
Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Anna University and medical
colleges, hospitals
and other organisations in the country have been invited to deliver lectures.
The programme is open to
faculty and students of engineering, science and medical colleges in Tamil Nadu,
scientists and members of the public and NGOs.
The topics to be covered
are:
Production of isotopes,
radiation in healthcare, applications of radioisotopes and radiation in
agriculture, applications of radioisotopes in industry, food preservation by
radiation processing, radiation technology equipment, radiation safety aspects,
radiation and radioisotopes for fingerprinting and conservation of antiques,
radiation and radioisotopes for diagnostic and therapeutic applications,
radiation and radioisotopes in chemical and life sciences, career prospects in
radiation-related technologies, eco-friendly applications of radioisotopes and
environmental impact.
The advancements of application
of radioisotopes and radiation technologies in various areas like medicine,
agriculture, research and industry today have enhanced the important and
peaceful uses of atomic energy by improving the quality of life in all spheres.
However, many people are still unaware of these developments and quite a number
of people have apprehensions about the use of radiation.
It is necessary to create
awareness among the masses about the beneficial uses of radioisotopes and
radiation technology. Realising the importance of dissemination of information
on the uses of radioisotopes and radiation for the benefit of mankind and for
bringing them together, experts in the nuclear field and the general public
would be brought together in one forum.
