Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Science University

Introduction and Brief History:

There was a time when man hunted animals for his food. Though one cannot with confidence say that hunting for game or food has been stopped completely, humanity has turned its attention to rendering medical assistance to animals as well. In fact there is a university in Tamil Nadu for the study of Veterinary Science. The Chennai Veterinary College, Namakkal Veterinary College and Research Institute and the College of Fisheries, Tuticorin are the colleges that come under the purview of this University.

The Chennai College of Veterinary Science was started in the year 1903, in Vepery and this college offered just one degree - Graduate of Madras Veterinary College. This college was later affiliated to the Madras University in 1935 and a Bachelor's degree course in Veterinary Science (B. V. Sc.) was introduced. This was the first such degree course to have been offered by an Indian University. 

This college was later upgraded as an institution that provides a Master's degree in Veterinary Science in South India, on the recommendation of the joint committee of Indian and American team for Agricultural Education and Research. 

It was in the year 1969 that the Directorate of Veterinary Science and Research and the research centre for chicken farm were established in Nandanam, followed by the research centre for pets in Kattuppakkam and as the research institute for sheep rearing. 

On 1.12.1976 the Veterinary Science College was brought under the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The College of Fisheries, Tuticorin was started on 9.9.1978 and the Namakkal Veterinary College and Research Institute was started on 14.6.1985. The Government of Tamil Nadu opened the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Science University on 20.9.1989.

Apart from the above, the Chennai Veterinary College offers a degree course, Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management in Animal/Fisheries Science. The Directorate of Continuing Education of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Science University is disseminating information through its various centres all over the state and also over the radio.

Job opportunities:

Those with a B V Sc degree can take the exams conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission and take up a job as a Veterinary doctor. And those with M V Sc can take the appropriate exam and become Assistant Professors in any Veterinary College in India. 

There are other opportunities like becoming a research scientist, veterinary doctor in the Animal Husbandry Department. There are job opportunities in Insurance companies, Banks, Department of Fisheries, Organisations for manufacture of medicine for animals and immunisation centres, Tamil Nadu Milk Marketing Co-operative Society, Animal farms, milk, meat and fish processing factories etc.
