 Anna University is all set to conquer the airwaves with its community radio, the first of its kind in India.

Dr R Sreedhar, director, Audio Visual Research Centre (AVRC), Anna University (AU), said, "Anna University has started this radio with the objective of empowering people and also providing the right to information."
The frequency alloted for AU community radio is 90.4 Mhz in Frequency Modulation (FM). This will cover a radius of more than 7 to 8 km and testing is in progress, the director stated.
Some people say that it is available at Tambaram, Parrys' and in many other places. The equipment for the radio is provided by Bharat
Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). All government agencies, including the Defence Department, have given clearance from their side for the radio, Sreedhar added.
The radio will be on the air for eight hours a day, four hours in the morning and four in the evening, i.e. 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
 Anybody can provide content for the radio, says the university. But it should be in the form of a tape or a CD. The content will be selected as per the codes set by the Government of India, the director pointed out.
The station will also be used as a radio tutor for disadvantaged students and address ethnic communities and groups and ascertain their needs. This radio will also serve as a lab for the electronic media students of Anna University.
