Marshals’ Technology Ltd, a part of Marshal’s Group, has announced the launch of a PG diploma programme in
Bio-Informatics in association with the
Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI).
This postgraduate diploma in Bio-Informatics (PGDIB) is targeted at students with a bioscience background, who wish acquire bio-computing skills and those with a background in computing who wish to gain molecular biology expertise.
Bio-Informatics is an emerging field of science in which life science and IT merge to form a single discipline and enable the discovery of new biological insights as well as to create a global perspective from which unifying principles in biology can be discerned. The Indian biotechnology industry is expected to reach $ 10 billion by 2010 (source –
CII report – Data Quest).
This course will meet the increasing demand for skilled experts, who can use computers to e-manipulate and analyse the growing quantities of genetic information available in pharmaceutical, biomedicine, medical informatics and biotechnology industries. The programme will enable the candidates to gain entry into pharma, IT, agricultural sectors, R&D organisations and food, chemical and manufacturing industry.
The PG programme will offer students wet lab training, expose them to guest lectures from industry experts, training on using bio-informatics tools (genomics & proteomics), research projects, short-term training on molecular biology experiments, industrial visits and live projects. Also, customised bridge programmes are offered for life sciences and computer student graduates, where they can choose modules according to their background and proficiency.
Activities in the area of biotechnology in CLRI took a definite shape in 1990 after the formation of the Department of Biotechnology. Specifically, the focus is in the areas of enzyme technology, in vivo and in vitro studies on connective tissue metabolism and in the development of plant and synthetic drugs for use in the animal models for myocardial infarction and arthritis. In addition, the department provides training in the above areas for carrying out Ph.D., M.Tech. and M.S. programmes of the University of Madras, Anna University, BITS and other universities.
