A cultural evening with Sukanya
Dubai Tamil Cultural Association also known as ‘Tamil Panpattu Kazhagam’ affiliated to the Indian Association, Dubai organised an evening of entertainment at Dubai on October 3, 2003 which was attended by a large number of Tamil expatriate friends with their Families. Cine fame ‘ Kalaimamani Sukanya’ along with her troupe performed some nice classic dances which were widely appreciated by the audience for the kind of variety she chose and her excellent facial expressions for the jatis, proving in the process that she is indeed one of the many jewels of the famous Kalakshetra School of Dances. It’s a pity that such a good dancer lost her way and wandered into ‘Kollywood’ and the ‘mega serial tamasha’ before finding back her roots to the School of Classical Dances to which she belongs.
The coordination between the anchors of the show was excellent and hats of to all the three artistes from the local broadcasting FM Radio Channels. The mimicry for the ‘Ennadi Muniyamma' song under the guise of different singers was a masterpiece. Local choreographer Lakshmi Venkatesh (of Kumara Sambhavam fame covered earlier by Chennaionline) again stole the show with some delightful songs set to dances of almost all Indian styles like Kuchupudi, Khathak, Rajasthani , Folk ,Gujarati etc., with a group of 70 Local children who had spent almost 2 months rehearsing for the show under her guidance. Her Snake and Peacock number where she really hissed and twisted was undoubtedly the best show of the evening and had the audience were at the edge of their seats as though a real Cobra was on the Stage. Hope one day some director or producer from Tamil film industry will utilise such talented choreographers instead of continuing to rely on the age old dance masters who throw up some ridiculous half exposed artistes shaking their thunderous thighs day in and day out.
A word of advice for the organisers. The venue where the event was planned was hardly equipped to handle such a large crowd and most of the families who came a bit late were not able to get seats and had to stand through the show. The video cameraman who covered the event was standing in the middle of the auditorium and was virtually blocking the view of the audience seated at the back rows causing frustration and restlessness. Hope the organisers take note of this and organise such events in more spacious and better venues in the days to come.
