Of course Kamal doesn’t believe in such sentiments. Incidentally it so happened that Kamal plays the dual role Alavandhan, accidentally. That’s all. No sentiments. And Kamal is a staunch non-believer to have such sentiments. The Alavandhan team is of the opinion that the literature the world over- entertainers in particular - is replete with ‘double role’ characters and it still holds the interests of the audience. The story was written by Kamal in a Tamil magazine about 20 years back. It revolves round a mentally deranged elder brother and his younger brother who serves in the army and the tussles between them. No, no. It is not copied from ‘Silence of the Lambs’ an Oscar winner. It was written many, many years before that movie hit the screens. Must be Thomas Harris should have stolen the story of Kamal - Dhaayam, its original name when it was serialised in the Tamil Magazine.
And then the younger brother of the army falls in love with Raveena Tandon who works for the Star TV and eventually they get married. The new members in the family are not able to understand the callous nature of the elder brother who is spending his lifetime in the jail and out of sympathy for him try to get him out. As a result they face danger to their lives. ‘Half god and half animal - that is the mixture I am made of’ sings Nandakumar and the nation plunges into a blood bath.
The present Hindi cinema is moving towards realism - like Lagaan, Lajja, etc. May be Alavandhan seeks to set a new kind of trend. And it is usual for Kamal to release a comedy after an experimental attempt. ‘Singaravelan’ followed ‘Guna’; ‘Maharasan’ followed ‘Thevar Magan’ and ‘Tenali’ followed ‘Hey Ram’. Kind of survival technique. Kamal is doing Pammal K. Sambandam, after Alavandhan.
