Kamal made many an eyebrow raise in amazement when he spoke on the occasion of his birthday, indicating his political inclinations for the first time. Kamal completed his 47th year this month and his fan club - Narpani Mandram - completed the 12th year of its activities. ‘In a country where a hundred million live, celebration of an individual’s birthday is not very important,’ said Kamal. ‘It is important how every individual chooses to live his life and what kind of service he renders to the society he lives in. Actually, it is service to the society which is more important than memorials that may be raised after an individual passes away.’
‘It was I who wrote the dialogue, ‘It is not possible to gather the fruits from the seed that has just been sown,’ for Dhevar Magan. The great Sivaji delivered it on the silver screen. I converted my fan club into a Welfare Movement. It was the seed that I sowed 12 years back and it has grown into a tree now. We are calling this land Gandhi’s country and are hoping against hope for the rebirth of Gandhi. We are looking for him in the forts of Delhi and the ditches of the Parliament. But we do not realise that Gandhi is still living among us. It is not necessary that Gandhi should be wearing kadhar. It is not necessary that he should be in Congress. He may be wearing any kind of dress and he may be in any political party.
Do not be surprised if I speak politics. I have my own ideas on politics, as every single one of us has. Our hands get stained once in five years with the indelible ink, on casting our votes. But politics today is stained completely.
Kamal said that once his daughter asked him to get into active politics but he said ‘no’ to her saying that she would have to lose him if he did that. ‘I am with you when I am at home. But, I will have to move away from you when the world becomes my home,’ I told her.
But the political scenario in the country is not all that good. Only 53% of the people cast their votes. Just a difference of 3% and it is half the country that is rejecting elections. It is not just rejection of the electoral system. It is a sad commentary on the political scenario of the day. Something has to be done. You cannot hand the country over to the terrorists. My fans are ready to get into the sewers to clean them. They wouldn’t hesitate to do so. If the situation demands, I won’t hesitate to throw myself along with them to clean politics that is getting transformed into a virtual sewer. So, Alavandhan becoming Ala
Varuvan?
Kamal’s eldest daughter, Shruthi then delivered her speech on terrorism. Hmm… Indira Gandhi in the making?
