| Hand Block Printing at DakshinaChitra |
Ethnic Indian crafts never ceases to lose its charm. This time, it is handblock-printing workshop at DakshinaChitra, the heritage centre situated at Muttukadu. The centre, which is committed to revival of arts, culture and ancient ethnic craft, is organising a two-day workshop on July 8 and 9.
Exquisite carvings in block, it is said, were originally available in teak. Now, of course there are varying options. The designs on the block are conjured for repeated use on fabric. The printing is
done by hand, and as you can see the name is derived from that. If natural dyes added colour in olden days, today it's synthetic dyes that does the job. And it is a booming cottage industry. But all this happens with certain restrictions on the type of the wood piece and style of printing.
Starting from 10 am on July 8, the workshop concludes on July 9 for Rs 500, inclusive of lunch and all materials. To register contact Vishalam, co-ordinator, Madras Craft Foundation, at 491 8943 or 446 2435.
