Remembering the Mahatma

Mahatma Gandhi, the chief architect of our historic freedom movement and the Father of our nation, has sadly been reduced to a mere ritualistic icon to be remembered only on his birth and death anniversaries and then relegated to limbo to be recalled profitably on the next similar occasion.

Corruption, consumerism, selfish individualism and such maligning cancerous factors have corroded Indian society with much degree of success, destroying all that the Mahatma stood for, preached, practised and sacrificed his life for the good of the nation. The great visionary that he was, he foresaw even more than half a century ago and warned the nation of the calamity that would overtake her and destroy the social fabric. Regretfully, his fears have come too true.
To stem the rot and remind and re-vitalise the nation and her citizens is the need of the hour.

To inspire the youth and remind the older generation of the ideas and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, 'The Spirit of Gandhi' exhibition, which was conducted on two occasions earlier on January 30 and October 2, 2002, will again be held for four days commencing Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Culture India Gallery, in collaboration with the Madras Coin Society.

The exhibition will display photographs, books, cartoons, Gandhiji's manuscript writings in Gujarati, Hindi and English, newspapers from 1939 to 1948 carrying the news of the declaration of the World War, Gandhiji's arrest during the Quit India movement, Kasturba's death in Aga Khan Palace, the grant of Independence, consolidation of States, assassination of Gandhi, tributes paid to him by heads of governments, postal stamps, coins and currencies issued in his honour by almost every country in the world and other immortal memorabilia.

Also on show will be rare collages of unobtainable pictorial and archival interest, the personal collection of V Sundaram, Editor of Kisan World, relating to the occupation of India by the East India Company starting from the 18th century, the British exploitation of India in the 19th century, the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the founding of the Indian National Congress in 1885, the Swadeshi and Extremist Movement in Bengal between 1904 and 1907 and the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi on the Indian National scene in 1917.
