Women's 2-wheeler rally

"Women are safe drivers", said R Nataraj, Commissioner of Police, Greater Chennai, at the prize distribution function of the Save Oil Two-Wheeler Women's Rally at Indian Oil Bhavan, Chennai conducted by the Oil Companies under the aegis, of Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA), on Sunday the 15th February 2004.

While addressing the gathering, Nataraj said that only 700 to 800 kms of the roads in Chennai are being used heavily when compared to the 1,800 kms of the total road distance and 'efforts are on to decongest major stretches of the roads where the traffic is very heavy' he added. He complimented women for participating in the economic and social development of the society by coming forward to play multiple roles.

The 'Save Oil Two Wheeler Women's Rally' was conducted by Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and IBP, in association with PCRA. Various efforts are taken to spread the message of judicious use of the precious petroleum products.

The Save Oil Two Wheeler Women's rally was based on the TSD format (time, speed and distance) and it took the participants two and a half to three hours to cover the distance of approximately 60 kms. A total number of 412 women participated in the event. The rally was organized and managed by Madras Motor Sports Club, (MMSC) Chennai.

Pramila Jacob and Lita Srinivasan won the first prize-a TVS Scooty Pep. Uma Maheshwari and Srividhya finished second and won the TVS Scooty. Kalpagam and Sujatha were the third prize winners to receive a TVS Moped.

Apart from these overall prizes, three best performers from the four starting points were also recognized with trophies and certificates. The event drew enthusiastic women from all over the city. Apart from the rally, painting competition for children on the title 'Save Oil and Gas' and a cookery contest for ladies on the topic 'Cooking without fire' were also held. Essay Competitions and slogan-writing competitions were also held in various schools and colleges and the winners were awarded during the function. The Duchess Club were the event managers for these competitions held during the day.

K R Suresh Kumar, Deputy General Manager, (Retail), Indian Oil gave the welcome address. V Ramaswamy, General Manager (Regional Services), Indian Oil delivered the keynote address. V K Bhargava, General Manager, PCRA, and S Muthukrishnan, Chairman, MMSC, addressed the gathering. K R Saikumar, Chief Manager (Retail) Bharat Petroleum, S Balasubramanian, Deputy General Manager, (HR), IndianOil, and Nina Reddy, President, The Duchess Club, were the other dignitaries who participated in the function. K Ramakrishnan, Chief Corporate Communications Manager, IndianOil, Southern Region, proposed a vote of thanks.
