The Lions club International District 324 A5 is organizing a Road safety campaign in Chennai on July 24, 2004 to stress the need to adhere to safety requirements on roads. This initiative is to mark the launch of the new district 324 A5; the organizers have prepared a single banner, which will stretch to 10 kms. This initiative is done in co-ordination with The Chennai City Traffic Police and Tamil Nadu Police Traffic Wardens Organization. Over 3,000 school students and road safety volunteers will hold the banner, which would stretch from Parry's Corner to Adyar, along the beach for a good part of the route. The banner will display 20 basic messages on road safety in English and Tamil which will be repeated 275 times along the 10 km stretch.
The event is set to break the current Limca Indian record for longest display banner from 8.5 km to 10 km. The campaign will stress the need to wear helmet, avoid using cell phone while driving and avoid using alcohol while driving. The route that will be covered is Secretariat; Army officer's bungalow, Labour Statue, Queen Mary's college, Lighthouse, Foreshore Estate, Aiyappan Temple and Andhra Mahila Sabha/Sathya studio. PMJF Lion N.R.Dhanapalan, District Governor (Lions International 324 A5), Mr. GUG Shastry, Joint Commissioner, Traffic- Chennai, will kick start this record breaking campaign. Mr. Sylendra Babu, Joint Commissioner of Police-Chennai North, will be the guest of honour. This mega event is organized by Lion SK. Murthy, District Chairman- Road Safety. Details of the event:
