The Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation organised a unique summer camp, 'Bala Gurukulam', for 15 days at its premises recently.
The Mylapore Trio of the foundation, S Amarnath, S Surendranath and S Aparna, said it was a different sort of camp based on tradition and culture, wherein children were exposed to the basics of Culture Class, Festivals, Traditional Games, Heritage Movies, Discover Mylapore & Madras, Art & Craft, Puppetry, Slokas, Bhajans, Yoga, Dance, simple cooking and the importance and significance of wearing traditional attire and many more.
Aparna said the highlight of the camp was children being given hands-on experience in dough art and simple cooking. They were exposed to poojas and festivals and taken for a spiritual walk to the famous seven Shiva Temples and other temples in
Mylapore.
"The other heritage visit was a trip to Vivekanandar Illam to learn and imbibe our glorious heritage," said Amarnath. In Nature Trail, they were taken to Guindy National Park to appreciate and admire the flora and fauna.
"The parents felt it was a different experience for their wards in learning the traditional and conventional household practices and customs, which are becoming extinct. The participants were given a certificate and a gift by the foundation," explains Surendranath.
