The office of the Principal Chief Postmaster General, Tamil Nadu
Circle, Anna Salai, Chennai - 600 002, released a special postal
cover to mark the 368th birthday of the Chennai (that was known as
Madras till 1996), on August 22, 2007, during Madras Day.

lndira Krishna Kumar, Principal Chief Postmaster General, Tamil
Nadu Circle, released the special cover and L K Tripathy, IAS, Chief
Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu, the chief guest at the
function, received the first cover.
The multi-coloured special cover, measuring 22 x 11 cms, was
specially broughtout using the latest printing technology, thereby
making the cover really a collector's item.
The front of the cover features the famous Fort St.George map as
completed in 1939. The fort is featured facing the sea which shows
the famous 'Madras Roads' with sailing ships of the time.
The diamond-shaped postal cancellation shows the famous flagmast
of Fort St.George, which is the tallest in India. The five rupees
denomination multicoloured stamp on the cover depicts the majestic
Senate House building inside the University of Madras campus,
Chepauk, another heritage building.

The back of the cover portrays 10 beautiful black and white
photographs of old Madras region from 1885 to 1923 along with a
brief history on the heritage city. The cover concept was conceived
and designed with passion by numismatist, notaphilist and
philatelists D H Rao and
S B Raja Seetharaman.
