Collector of Kancheepuram, R Venkatesan, flagged off the contest. The contest flag-off programme was attended by many NGOs, Secretaries of the Panchayat level federation, community organizers of the panchayat office, assistant director of the Panchayat, representatives and block level co-ordinators of valar kalvi mayyam, Secretaries of block level co-ordination committee, executive officers of town panchayats and mukhia sevikas of the Blocks. Venkatesan distributed the contest form and called upon women to participate in the contest and come up with innovative business ideas. Representatives from BYST also briefed the gathering on the activities of the Trust and the objectives of this contest.
Vettrikku Vazhi …… Suya Thozhil, a contest on best business ideas, is aimed at encouraging young women in around 648 villages in Kancheepuram district to come up with creative and viable business ideas that could be converted into a successful dynamic micro-enterprises. The contest will also give a boost to the entrepreneurial culture in Kancheepuram and promote new business ideas among the young women. Young women in the age group of 18–35 years residing within Kancheepuram district are eligible to participate in the contest. The best three ideas will be awarded with cash prizes of Rs 10,000, Rs 7,500 and Rs 5,000 respectively along with certificates during a one-day conference to be held on Women’s day on 8th March, 2004 at Chennai. Those interested may enter this contest by filling up a business idea contest form available with the Block development offices, town and village Panchayat offices of Kancheepuram district and the BYST at Chennai. Drop boxes to collect the contest forms will also be available with the Block development offices, town and village Panchayat in Kancheepuram district. The filled up forms may also be handed over either directly or by post to the BYST, 35/1, Abhiramapuram 3rd Street, Alwarpet, Chennai 600 018.
