Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight

"Saving oil by the barrels is preferable to saving it by drops," said S Ramakrishnan, Principal Secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu, Co-operation, Food and Consumer Protection, while inaugurating the Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight 2004 at Chennai on January 16.

Ramakrishnan complimented the oil companies in conducting the Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight annually to spread awareness on this cause. He further urged the oil industry to concentrate on 'broader routes of conservation' in using the scarce natural resources optimally.

While delivering the key-note address, V Anand, General Manager, Southern Railways, pointed out, "As against the World Energy consumption mark of 1.68 million tonnes of oil equivalent (MTOE), India presently had a long way to go in reaching the World Energy mark with its current average consumption of 0.32 MTOE. India would always remain a nett importer of petroleum products, with its need to improve the quality of life of its people."

"Alternate energy sources like hydro electricity, thermal power and bio diesel should be seriously looked into as different sources of energy in order to optimize the usage of petroleum products. The Indian Railways is marching ahead in a big way in the development of bio-diesel," he said.

Earlier, welcoming the gathering, C Ramachandran, State-Level Co-ordinator for the Oil Industry and General Manager, IndianOil, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, said, "Conservation and Environment Protection go hand in hand; the oil industry members, IndianOil, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and IBP join hands with PCRA (Petroleum Conservation and Research Association) to conduct this event annually."

S N Rao, PCRA, V Ramaswamy, General Manager, IndianOil and other senior oil industry officials attended the function.
