Liberty Revolutions showroom in Chennai

It's not about yet another glittering showroom opening in a prime location in Chennai. It's a concept that will open new frontiers in retail selling, says Adarsh Gupta, executive director, Liberty Group.

It's a high-fashion chain that will cater to individual styles and looks in an ambience that will be as magical and exciting as the products being lined up. It's Revolutions at Spencer Plaza - part of a chain of exclusive retail showrooms from Liberty Retail Revolutions Ltd., the newest member of the Liberty Group that will offer the fashion cognoscenti freedom from the usual, Gupta said in Chennai.

Revolutions will not just be about footwear. It will also house a wide range of high-end fashion products including leather and travel accessories, sunglasses, watches and artificial jewellery, thus giving the customers a choice of the very desirable, very premium.

Fashion shows will be a frequent feature in Revolutions, he says. Needless to say, the opening of the showroom on April 9 was marked by a fashion show, with the participation of several leading models.

The Revolutions stores will open in fashion capitals around the world. After the opening of the first Revolutions store at Inorbit in Malad, Mumbai, the scene has shifted to Chennai. The second Revolutions store opened at Spencer Plaza in Anna Salai with a fashion razzmatazz. This will be followed by four more at Forum in Kolkata and Prasad Mall in Hyderabad, The DLF Mega Mall in Gurgaon and CR2 at Nariman Point in Mumbai are also in the list.

“This is just the beginning, Eighteen more Revolutions stores will be opening shortly in various parts of the country as well as one each in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Dhaka, Colombo, Karachi and Dubai by 2006," Gupta said.

“Liberty has completed 50 eventful years that virtually redefined footwear fashion in India," Gupta said.

"It's been a journey of path-breaking enterprise. One that began from Karnal with a dream of liberating the Indian footwear buyer from the shackles of limited choice and outdated technology. And the men who dared to dream big were the brothers D P Gupta, P D Gupta and their sister's son, R.K. Bansal," Adarsh said.

Today, Liberty is the only Indian company that features in the list of the world's top five manufacturers of leather footwear with a turnover in excess of Rs 350 crore. Producing more than 50,000 pairs of footwear a day with a range that's among the largest in the industry, covering virtually every age group and income category from the price-conscious to the price-indifferent. These are marketed across the globe through 150 distributors, 350 exclusive showrooms and over 5,000 multi-brand stores. And are sold in thousands every day in more than 25 countries including fashion-driven, quality-obsessed nations like the US, France, Italy, Spain, Singapore and Germany.

“Understanding the nuances of the latest global fashion trends and using the most advanced CAD facility, the designers at Liberty have walked away with the honours at several fashion shows, making style statements that have swept the cognoscenti off their feet," Gupta said.

A new plant is coming up at Uttaranchal to supplement existing manufacturing capacity, diversification into new product lines, opening of premium 'Revolution' stores catering to the higher-end of the market and acquiring an even more pronounced presence in the world of fashion arena, are just some of the immediate goals.

Adarsh said the company would invest Rs 20 crore in its India stores in the next two years, with 25 new stores planned in 18 months, besides Rs 6 crore to be invested in stores abroad. By 2005-2007, when all the 25 stores would be fully operational, an additional turnover of Rs 75 crore would be expected at the rate of Rs 3 crore per store.

The company has also plans for an additional plant in Andhra Pradesh or Karnataka, he added.
