LG's DTH-ready TV

LGEIL, a leader in consumer electronics, has brought forward yet another innovation - the LG Digi Direct TV, India's first Direct-to-Home (DTH)-ready TV.

India has over 40 million non-cable & satellite households in India (source: NRS round 2, 2002). This untapped segment was the main driver for LG Electronics' strategic decision to introduce LG Digi Direct TV into the Indian market. LG sensed a need for such a product to complement the services provided by the DTH service providers in the country. LG Electronics, with over 150 area offices, will reach all the upcountry markets of India for the distribution of this innovative product, said Sanjeev Jain, product group head of CTVs, LGEIL.

LG Digi Direct TV will be able to receive all free-to-air channels - 33 TV channels including 17 DD channels and 12 radio channels (with 2 FM channels). LG has currently introduced two models of 21" & 29" Flat. One model each in 20" & 21" in the conventional category will be introduced in March 2005.

LG Digi Direct TV is the outcome of the effort of LG Electronics' in-house R & D team at its Greater Noida plant. The team developed the new hardware to integrate DTH decoder with television hardware and developed a common software which can control normal television & DTH function with the same remote. LG Digi Direct TV is a user-friendly and simple solution since it does not need a separate set-top box and remote control for DTH function.

Deba Ghoshal said, "Digi Direct is yet another innovation from LG Electronics that is aimed specifically towards millions of consumers in India who do not have access to cable and satellite (C & S) network, particularly in the non-metro areas. The introduction of Digi Direct will further consolidate our No 1 position in the CTV industry. We plan to target over 1 lakh units in 2005."

Deba Ghoshal, head, brand management & product planning (CE), LGEIL, said, "Our brand focus for '05 will be new technology offerings to Indian consumer. Over the last couple of years we have been successful in offering customised display solutions to suit the Indian market. With an investment of over Rs 1 million towards R&D for the development of this product, LG Digi Direct is a step forward in strengthening our technology lead in the market."
