eBay India on fast growth track

eBay India plans to increase its business by over four times and take its marketshare from the present level of 35 per cent to well above 50 per cent in the next two to three years, said Gautam Thakar, director, Category Management and Marketing, eBay India Pvt Ltd.

It expects considerable growth through exports, particularly to English-speaking countries like the US, UK, Canada, besides Germany, Gautam added.

eBay has 135 million registered users worldwide. In 2004, more than 60 per cent of eBay's new registered users came from the international business.

At any given time, there are approximately 44 million items available on eBay worldwide, and approximately 4 miilion new items are added each day. eBay users trade in more than 50,000 categories.

In Q4-04, eBay hit a record of 889 million page views, 270 million searches, 15 million bids and 11.7 gigabits of data per second in a single day.

Profitable since its launch, eBay net revenues totalled $ 935.8 million in Q4-04 and & 3.3 billion for the full year 2004. 

eBay has a global presence in 32 international markets, including USA.

Based on Q4-04 data, eBay users worldwide now trade more than $ 1,168 worth of goods on the site every second.

In Q4-04, gross merchandise volume (GMV), the value of all successfully closed listings on eBay worldwide, was $ 9.8 billion. eBay's international GMV accounted for 48 per cent of the company's total GMV during Q4-04. eBay's global GMV for the full year 2004 was $ 34.2 billion.

Cross-border trade accounts for approximately 15 per cent of GMV on eBay.

Based on Q4-04 GMV, eBay has 12 categories that delivered $ 1 billion or more in worldwide annualized GMV: eBay motors at $ 11.1 billion; consumer electronics at $ 3.5 billion; computers at $ 3.0 billion; clothing & accessories at $ 2.9 billion; books/movies/music at $ 2.4 billion; collectibles at $ 2.2 billion; home and garden at $ 2 billion; toys at $ 1.8 billion; sports at $ 1.8 billion; jewellery and watches at $ 1.7 billion; cameras and photo at $ 1.3 billion; and business and industrial at $ 1.2 billion.

While eBay is well-known for its auction format, users can also buy and sell in fixed-price formats, which accounted for nearly 31 per cent of total GMV in Q4-04.

PayPal's total payment volume (TPV) , the total dollar volume of payments initiated through the Paypal system, was $ 5.6 billion in Q4-04 and $ 18.9 billion in 2004. Paypal has 63.8 million registered accounts and is available in 45 countries. 

More than 430,000 people in the US, and thousands more around the world, are making all or most of their living by selling on eBay.

The most expensive item sold on eBay to date is a private business jet for $ 4.9 million.

eBay India

eBay India (formerly Baazee.com), India's leading online marketplace, is a 100 pre cent subsidiary of eBay.

eBay India has over 1 million registered users. These users come from over 240 cities in India.

eBay India offers three formats to sell your product or service - auction-style, fixed-price and classifieds (for real estate and services).

83 per cent of all listings on eBay India offer Paisa Pay - a secure payment gateway enabling credit card and online bank transfers.

Thousands of sellers sell on eBay India daily across 2,500 categories of products.

  • A book sells every 90 minutes

  • A toy sells every 22 minutes 

  • A watch sells every 6 minutes 

  • A piece of jewellery sells every 9 minutes 

  • A laptop sells every 2 hours 

  • A mobile handset sells every 10 minutes 

  • A Bollywood costume sells every 3 days 

  • A digital camera sells every 34 minutes

  • A camcorder sells every 75 minutes

  • A U5B device sells every hour

  • A VCD sells every hour

  • An MP3 player sells every 83 minutes

  • A piece of men's apparel sells every 32 minutes
