The Foundation chairman V Selvam said its aim was to create a Welfare Fund for sportspersons, organise sport events and confer awards on those who have made significant contribution to the field of sports including sportspersons, corporates, officials of sport bodies and mediapersons who encourage sports. Selvam said the Sankaracharya believed that unity among human beings can be achieved only through sports. Sports is the only medium where religion, castes, creed and status are irrelevant. Sport can unite people hailing from different backgrounds.
NSF will be a consortium open to the entire sports community, which includes sportsmen, sports administrators, governing Bodies and sports lovers, Selvam said it will act as an apex body for all sports where, the funds will be pooled according to the sports calendar and an action plan based on preset priorities, R Mani, a Trustee of the NSF pointed out. NSF will offer numerous activities like intensive coaching at different skill levels and conducting tournaments and matches to identify the budding talent. The foundation will also provide sponsorship and financial support to encourage talent and sports development. The Foundation will provide sports sponsorship and financial support to the needy segments through co-ordination with the government, public / corporate sectors, for the events organized by the sports organisations / federations. A sports communication journal - 'The Sports leader' is scheduled to be published shortly. The NSF is a public charitable trust set up by sports enthusiasts with the blessings of the Sankaracharya. The Foundation will also function as a forum for discussions on sports and sports-based issues and events. It will provide sponsorship support for sporting events. It will also introduce scholarships for sportsmen and sports administrators on an annual basis, Selvam said.
NSF has entered into an understanding with Leisure Sports Management Private Ltd, Kolkata, for the mega event of the awards function, which is scheduled to be held in July in Chennai. 51 persons will be presented awards this year. The Sankaracharya has entrusted V Shankar, Secretary General of Peetarohana Swarna Jayanthi Celebrations All India Committee, to co-ordinate with the NSF for the successful conduct of the award ceremony, Selvam added.
