Nadal to take part in Chennai Open
World No 2 and French Open champion Rafael Nadal of Spain will be seen in action at the $ 400,000 ATP Chennai Open tennis in January 2007.
"The Chennai tournament is a great event and the enthusiasm of the crowds is very encouraging. I was unfortunate to miss it out last year due to injury. I love India and it is a
pleasure to be coming back," Nadal was quoted as saying in a press release on November 7, 2006.
Nadal had taken part in the event in 2004 (then Tata Open) as a 16-year-old rookie. He had lost in the first round to Frenchman Thierry Ascione but teamed up with
compatriot Tommy Robredo to win the doubles.
He had also confirmed his participation in the 2006 edition but a niggling injury to his left foot forced him to pull out.
"I cherish my doubles title in Chennai. I hope to make it good in singles this time and am really looking to playing at the Chennai Open. I am confident that I will raise my game to the highest level and get a great start to the new ATP Champions race in 2007," he said.
The Chennai Open, South Asia's premier ATP tennis tournament, running in its 12th year, will be held from January 1 to 7 at the SDAT stadium at Nungambakkam.
