1st World Tenniquoits Championship
India will host the First World Tenniquoits Championship at The Velammal International School, Panchetti, Chennai, till November 10, 2006. The tournament will be sponsored and conducted by the The Velammal International School, Panchetti, an institution which is keen to develop both the field of education and sports.
M V M Velmurugan, CEO, Velammal Group, and organising secretary, World Tenniquoits Championship, said the event had attracted entries from the following eight countries:
South Africa, Germany, the UK, Brazil, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and host India.
Nearly 120 players and 50 officials from these countries are expected to participate.
All the matches will be covered live by Doordarshan. South Africa and Germany have also applied for uplinking facilities for the event to be shown live in their countries.
The headquarters of the World Tenniquoit Federation is based in Germany and the secretary general is Reinhard
Plog.
S Venugopal, former Union Minister for Power and Agriculture, is the founder-president of the World Tenniquoit Federation and Tennikoit Federation of India. B S Nagaraj is the secretary general of Tennikoit Federation of India.
The Tennikoit Federation of India was formed in 1964 with four states as members. It now has 27 state associations. The game has spread all over India and tournaments are being conducted at all levels, said
Venugopal.
