The Madras Ladies Open and Handicap Golf Championship
2007 will be conducted on the Kodaikanal Golf Course from August 7 to
10, 2007. The championship is being organised by The South India Ladies
Golf Association (SILGA), which consists of lady golfers from Chennai.
The golf course in Kodaikanal is nestled at 7,000 ft
above sea level in the Palani Hills with great ambience of a cool
breeze, green grass and wooded hills, and is considered one of the
prettiest golf courses in India, said Madhur Khanna, president SILGA.
The Madras Ladies Golf Championship is a categorised
tournament - one among a schedule of tournaments conducted under the
aegis of The Indian Golf Union Ladies Section (IGULS), the governing
body for Amateur Ladies Golf in India. The best amateur lady golfers
from all over the country will participate to earn points for The
National Order of Merit. Teams that represent India in international
amateur events are selected from this Order of Merit.
The championship is played over 4 days as 72-hole stroke
play and is conducted in three divisions played concurrently. The
tournament is open to all lady golfers with a valid handicap of up to
36. The handicap divisions are: Gold - 12 and below, Silver - 13 to 24,
Bronze - 25 to 36.
Prizes will be awarded to the best Gross, Nett and
Runner-up in each division. There are categories for Sub-Juniors (under
14 years), Juniors (under 18 years) and Seniors (above 50 years).
Seniors will play 54 holes while the Juniors and Sub-Juniors will play
72 holes.
Over the first three days of the championship, there

A prize for one best Gross Score will also be awarded.
The chairperson of the championship committee,
Lalitha Balasubramaniam, said this year the event has drawn 50 entries
from all parts of India. Almost half the field is in the Gold Division,
followed by Silver Division and Bronze Division. “This is very
heartening indeed as it shows that ladies golf in India has grown
enormously in numbers and talent. A large number of participants in the
Gold Division are junior players and this proves the commitment and
dedication of youngsters to golf,” Lalitha pointed out.
The ladies will play to earn points, the top 10 for
The National Order of Merit. “The tournament has been possible with the
generous support and sponsorships we have received from well-wishers of
ladies golf, particularly Mr N Srinivasan - India Cements Ltd, Mr M
Balasubramanian (Captain - The Kodaikanal Golf Club), Port of Chennai
and Punjab National Bank. The tournament is being managed by Media Mix
Innovative Promotions Pvt Ltd,” said Madhur Khanna. The tournament
coordinator is Jayanan Satagopal.
Lalitha said Chennai has about 25 golfers of whom 18
were regular. A lot of juniors were active too, she pointed out.
The All-India Ladies Golf Championship will be held
at Coimbatore in 2008. The qualifying and the match play events will be
held at Coimbatore, where there are three lady members of the
