It
was a dream come true for women in and around Chepauk. Sornammal
Educational Trust (SET) has opened its fifth branch at CNK Road,
Chepauk. Through this trust women are informed about the various job
opportunities available to them and their family members. The trust
also provides vocational training for women through which their
talents are nurtured.
The new branch was inaugurated by Dr R Bhuvana, Chief Social
Development Officer, Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, Chennai, on
December 20.
K Pandia Rajan, chairman, SET, Hemalatha Rajan,
trustee, SET, K Murugaiya, district manager, Tamil Nadu Adi Dravida
Housing Development Corporation (TADHCO), Chennai, Mehboob Basha,
project officer, Tami Nadu Women Development Corporation, Chennai,
Srikanth, auditor, SET, Dhanraj, manager, Indian Bank, S Sakthivel,
regional deputy director, Commerce and Industries Department, and A
D Padmasingh Isaac, managing director, Aachi Masala, were also
present at the inaugural function.
Joel S G R Bose, senior manager, SET, welcomed
the gathering.
Pandia
Rajan, in his address, said following Ayanavaram, Mehta Nagar, Mint
and Egmore, the trust was formed in Chepauk to make women aware of
the various rights and the grants provided to them by the
government.
The branch would have five organisers and one
project manager. “There are around 10,000 women, part of the
Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and they do chores such as making bags,
files and recycling of paper. All the services are offered free of
cost,” he added.
Pandia
Rajan stated that companies like Aachi Masala had come forward to
recruit women from the SHGs.
Dr Bhuvana congratulated SET for its various
services rendered in the field of education and employment. She
stressed the importance of the vocational training provided by the
trust, which would help the women lead an independent life.
Dhanraj
said the bank provided loans totalling Rs 40,000, based on the
profit earned by women in the first six months and he assured them
that it would be increased to around Rs 10 lakh in future, depending
on their progress.
Murugaiya said TADHCO would finance those
belonging to the Adi Dravida Self Help Groups.
Padmasingh Isaac handed over various ready-to-eat
Aachi Masala products to interested women groups for marketing.
