Anglo-Scapes
is a fortnight-long 'festival' focusing on the Anglo-Indian community. Being held in Chennai from July 1 to July 16, this unique event will feature a
photo exhibition, an art exhibition, a food festival, a play, film screenings and a music concert, each a window to this 400-year-old community, which, though relatively small in numbers, has carved out a distinct niche for itself not only in India but all over the world.
Eugene is not only the first Anglo-Indian artist to illustrate Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali but also the first Indian to illustrate all the 103 lyrics. His fine black & white and colour illustrations for Gitanjali is an earnest attempt to understand the abstract element of the classic poet's greatest work.
Former head of the Department of English at St Joseph's College in Trichy, his illustrations retain the mystical quality of the lyrics and is a visual treat for any viewer. Eugene's sincere hope is that his work will motivate more people to delve deeper into the Gitanjali and derive comfort and joy.
A natural artist and poet, Eugene has many poems and short stories to his credit, which have won laurels and accolades, and his oil paintings and water colours are periodically exhibited at Chennai and other places. His paintings do not belong to any particular genre.
His published books are The Fire Rose, Rose Petals and an anthology
Yatra.
Eugene D'Vaz lives and works in Golden Rock, Tiruchirapalli.
