Gallery Sri Parvati is organising an art exhibition 'Hum Paanch', showcasing the recent creations of five contemporary women artists. The participants are: Asma Menon, Benitha Perciyal, Nupur Chaterji Nair, Premalatha Seshadri and Tamara de Laval of Sweden. All the five have evolved their own styles and expressions over the years.
Asma, who indulges not only in painting but in print making and installations also, is known for taking recourse to fables and myths to give expression to her ideas. She is a
very active worker, constantly exploring new ideas and mediums.
Benitha is very individualistic in thinking and often delves into herself for her creative expressions in painting, mixed media work and installations. Quite young, she is
climbing steadily higher in the appreciation and acclaim scale of lovers of contemporary art.
Living in the quiet ambience of Injambakkam near the sea,
Premalatha’s abstract landscapes of Injambakkam are delightful, while her 'Birds of Kaveri' are minimalistic
drawings which have been highly appreciated. She has also brought out a couple of volumes of her poetry.
Tamara, an artist from Sweden, has made several visits to India and had also exhibited her works. She does both very large and quite small paintings and mixed media work
combining elements from nature, architecture, etc.
Though a very good sculptor, Nupur had remained a somewhat silent spectator of the scene and is emerging out slowly. Powerful bronzes are her forte. She lives and works
at Cholamandal Artists Village along with her sculptor husband Rajasekaran Nair.
'Hum Paanch' will be inaugurated by well-known dancer Anita Ratnam on January 10, 2007, at 6 p.m. at Gallery Sri Parvati, 28/160 Eldams Road, Alwarpet, Chennai 600
018. A surprise awaits the visitors to the inauguration.
The show will remain open till January 24, 2007, 11 a.m. 7 p.m.
