Naturequest will conduct a unique puppet
show on conservation on Saturday, April 21, at 7 p.m., Book
Point Auditorium, 160 Anna Salai (Opp. Spencer Plaza). This
is open to all and entry is free.
Olive-Kuppamma and Ridley-Suppamma, two of
Chennai's sea turtles, invite you to share with them the
unique story of their lives, and how they have survived on
Chennai's coast against all odds. Through puppetry (in Tamil)
they will tell us of their survival from hatchlings to young
adults who have now returned to the beach of their birth, to
lay their own eggs. The turtles' tale is, in fact, an appeal
to each of us to help ensure the hatchlings' survival and
their return to the beaches of Chennai, where Olive Ridleys
are known to have nested since at least 400 A.D.
Dr R Bhanumathi, managing trustee, Pavai
Centre for Puppetry, will be the chief guest of the programme,
and will give a short introduction and demonstration on
puppetry, one of the most ancient forms of entertainment in
the world.
Puppetry, a dying visual art, besides
providing entertainment, is being used in an interactive way
by the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust (MCBT) to convey
environmental conservation messages. The two stories will be
enacted by S Guganandhan, K Veerapathiran, D Nithyanandham, E
Dinesh and I Karunakaran of Vadanemelli, co-ordinated by K
Cyril Rufus, MCBT's Education Officer.
