Colour changing sarees from Kumaran
Sri Kumaran Stores has announced the introduction of 'Maya Sarees' - whose designs change colour the natural way - when exposed to sunlight.
P J Ravi, partner, Sri Kumaran Stores, says this is a first-of-its-kind saree. "Never before has anyone managed to make sarees' designs change colours automatically when exposed to sunlight and return to the original colour while moving interiors or to a shade."
Ravi said with pride that this was yet another innovation from Sri Kumaran Stores. "We have been working on this concept for over six months. The inspiration was triggered on seeing a rainbow while driving. Just as the rainbow appears and remains visible for just a few seconds, we wondered if it was possible to make colours appear and disappear on a silk saree. The research paid off and today we have launched: 'Maya Sarees' and 'Maya Pavadais', realising that women and children could have fun and would love to wear it."
"We have created this saree without zari for two reasons: one, zari takes attention off the colour-changing designs; two, it brings down the cost, making it affordable for all. Maya Sarees are available from prices upwards of Rs 4,500 to Rs 7,500 and pavadais available upwards of Rs 3,800.
Ravi said nearly 200 sarees had been made in this variety and these were available for sale. If there was greater demand, orders would be booked and supplies undertaken later, he added.
Established in 1955, Sri Kumaran Stores has customers spanning generations. Kumaran Stores has been able to stand the test of time, thriving even in the midst of intense competition and "seasonal discount gimmicks". Yet another example of its spirit of innovation was the 3-D saree that was created a few months ago - another first-of-its-kind product.
Sri Kumaran Stores believes that customers want to buy something unique even while buying a traditional silk saree, Ravi said. "Silk saree business has remained largely unaffected because of the unique designing involved, despite the great influence of Western culture in recent times," Ravi added.
Like chameleons changing colour, politicians are changing colour - it's election time. It is perhaps the right season for Kumaran Stores to come out with this product.
