Adi Perukku celebrated
Last year, the riverbed was dry and the local government had to set up borewells or hire water tankers to help people have a 'shower' at least during the Adi Perukku festival when devotees take a dip in the holy rivers in Tamil
Nadu.
But this year, on August 3, lakhs of people, married couples, newlyweds and young girls, gathered on the banks of the Cauvery in the delta districts to offer worship to the river Goddess on the auspicious festival of Adi Perukku and bathed to their heart's content.
With 10,000 cusecs of water being released from the Mettur Dam since the previous week, on the orders of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, to enable people celebrate the festival, devotees who gathered at Ammamandapam in Srirangam and various places downstream such as Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai and Tiruvarur were a happy lot.
"There was no water and the riverbed was dry last year. Now we are happy to see so much of water. We prayed for water last year and now our prayer has been answered by the Goddess," said a devotee in
Tiruchi.
Devotees offered worship with rice, coconut and kungumam. Women changed their thalis and offered yellow threads to friends and relatives.
Adi Perukku is celebrated on the 18th day of Adi - also known as Pathinettam Perukku - as per the Tamil almanac when people pray to the river Cauvery seeking growth and prosperity.
In Madurai, hundreds of people offered worship at the tank of the Sri Meenakshi temple.
