Film fest on human rights
Breakthrough presented Tri Continental Film Festival 2006 titled 'Human Rights in Frames'. The festival was organised by Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF) in association with Uhuru Productions and the Federation of Film Societies of India, at the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce Theatre in Chennai.
The festival was inaugurated by the Commissioner of Central Excise, C S Nayak, at the Film Chamber theatre on February 1. The Secretary, Information and Tourism Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, V Varaprasada Rao, said in his speech it was creditable that a theme like human rights had been chosen for this fest. "Ultimately, what everyone looks for in life is dignity and human rights," he said.
Suhasini Manirathnam said such festivals were real eye-openers as far as the public and the film industry were concerned. She recalled that she often had to unlearn what was taught to her in the classrooms of the Film Institute when she watched films over the weekends.
