Bommalattam
Bharathiraja has proved why he is rated among the finest filmmakers of Tamil. He has gone a few steps ahead in his illustrious career by narrating a genuine emotional drama in the backdrop of murder mystery.

The long wait has proved to be worth. Veteran director Bharathiraja has proved his mettle with his typical identity and has given us an absorbing thriller that puts intelligence and emotion together in a right mix. The film has got everything right - the casting, no nonsense screenplay, brilliant performances and the tempo.

Next to Bharathiraja, it is veteran Hindi actor Nana Patekar, who steals the show in a powerful role. The bollywood actor has shown his caliber in a role that has many shades and powerful substance.

Arjun, on the other hand, surprisingly impresses in a subdued role. For once, his muscle power has given way to his brain's prowess. The experienced actor has utilized the opportunity well.

T Rana (Nana Patekar), an outstanding director, who has got many national and international awards, is an eccentric (he prefers to call himself as a perfectionist though). His films used to have aesthetic appeal and lot of experimentation in content and style. The maverick director is quite demanding when it comes to working standards and hence it is always tough for anyone to work with him.

The personal life of the renowned director is in shambles. The unique and unexpected ways of the director along with his natural charm makes him endearing to many girls and hence wife (Ranjita) is always suspicious about him.

Rana introduces Trishna (Ragini). The girl is his discovery and he keeps her away from the media light. He is in for a shock on the day he plans to introduce the girl to the media. Then he runs away with the girl and creates an accident in which Trishna dies.

Since there were two more murders happened during the shooting of his film, the investigation is handed over to CBI led by Vivek Varma (Arjun), who interrogates Rana with intensity. His girl friend Anita (Kajal Agarwal), a fanatic fan of the director, sympathizes for his situation.

Vivek's investigation unearths the mystery over the murders. All the evidences point towards one man, i.e., Rana. As per his investigation, Rana has killed two persons, who had misbehaved with the girl. But the mystery over the 'accident' of Trishna is yet to be solved.

Who is the real culprit? What was Rana's stake in all these happening? Who is Trishna?

Bharathiraja has narrated the story brilliantly. He has used the flashbacks to unfold the story in phases, as the investigation goes on. The subtlety with which he portrays the shades of the character of Rana is commendable. The script is almost perfect without any glaring loopholes. The dialogues are sharp and amazingly focused. Above all, the climax is so powerful and stunning that it sends a shiver into your spine.

Bharathiraja has done a marvelous thing by putting the humanness above all and triumphs in driving home the point effectively without sounding preachy. He shows director Rana, who has a lot of self pride in his creativity, putting his whole career and even life at stake just because of his love towards a fellow human being.

Nana Patekar is amazingly realistic and credible to the core in his depiction of the maverick director. He is outstanding in handling the emotions including anger, sympathy, dejection, and meticulous working spirit. We could not imagine any other actor in the role. In short, he lives the role.

One particular scene stands out. Rana's wife storms into the sets when Rana narrates the scene to the hero passionately. His wife humiliates him in the sets by shouting at him. The director resumes his work after she leaves. He narrates the situation once again. The majestic filmmaker could not swallow the humiliation. It shows. The feelings reflect in his work. He is not able to control his tears. So is the audience. Hats off Nana!

Arjun plays the cool headed CBI officer rather stylishly. Though Kajal's role is not that powerful the beautiful girl adds charm and colour to the narratve. Vivek manages to make us laugh while Manivannan as the lecherous landlord is convincing.

Himmesh Reshammiya's background score is an asset to the film and his tunes are attractive. Cinematographer Kannan has done an excellent job in capturing the beauty of the locations and bringing the right by using apt colours.
