Kalai Foundation, in association with Alliance Française of Madras presents NEE ENGEY - SHADOW PUPPET THEATRE FESTIVAL from 1st to 8th August, 2004 at the Alliance Française of Madras, 24, College Road, Chennai
Following last year's success of the festival, organized in July at Alliance Française of Madras, where nine shadow puppet theatre groups from Tamil Nadu and one contemporary group from Bengal participated, NEE ENGEY -
SHADOW PUPPET THEATRE FESTIVAL is back this year on a much bigger scale.
The festival will be held in from Chennai from the 1st to 8th August 2004 at the Alliance Francaise of Madras Auditorium, before moving on to other places. Shadow Puppeteers from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and West Bengal will participate and perform in the Chennai event. Apart from performances, there will special programmes for children, interaction and workshop for college students.
Kalai Bhushanam Awards will be presented to Shadow Puppeteers, Belagallu Veeranna and Murugan Rao, on 7th August. The festival will conclude with a seminar on 8th August, on the topic 'Rural art forms in the context of changing rural life style'. The festival is supported by India Foundation for the Arts, South Zone Cultural Centre and Raagas apart from other collaborators in many cities and towns in
Tamilnadu.
NEE ENGEY (Where are you), a feature length documentary film made by R V Ramani is about the last generation shadow puppeteer families living in south India. NEE ENGEY - SHADOW PUPPET THEATRE FESTIVAL will open with the screening of this documentary film followed by Shadow Puppet Theatre performances, interaction and workshops with the puppeteers, some of whom are featured in the film. A short video clipping will be shown on 27th July 2004.
Special performances and workshops
There also will be special performances for school children and others in the morning.
Interactive workshops on Shadow Puppet Theatre will be conducted by the visiting puppeteers for college students and others, between 1400 and 1700 hrs.
