Vasoolraja M. B. B. S.
Director: Saran
Cast: Kamal Haasan, Prabhu, Sneha, Prakashraj, Nagesh, Jaisurya, Rohini Hattangadi
The local thug who poses as a doctor running his own hospital, when his parents visit him; their shock and heart-burn when they discover the true facts about their son; the rowdy's attempts to right matters by joining a medical college using subterfuge; his bete noire the dean of the college; his love the dean's daughter. All provided for some hilarious entertainment in 'Munnabhai M. B. B. S.' With its clever blend of humour and sentiment, its punchy lines and wise-cracks, and a suitable cast, the film could have turned out to be a rollicking affair if remade in another language.
Provided it had the right casting, the punch in dialogue was maintained, and the feel of the film was retained. But
'Vasoolraja....' just fails to get on track. The feel of the original is missing, the dialogue lacks punch. 'Jaadoo Ki Jhappi' translated as 'Kattipudi Vaidyam' just doesn't give the same feeling. This goes for the rest of the lines too. You do laugh, but not as heartily or as frequently as the script warranted. The sentimental scenes too just passes you by, superficially touching you. The casting too hasn't worked here.
No doubt, it's difficult to think of a more suitable actor than
Kamal Haasan for the role of the rowdy Vasoolraja, trying to make it desperately as the respectable Dr. Rajaram. But Kamal has done this type of role a hundred times before, with the same body language and slang, like in
'Pammal K Sambhandam', and can offer nothing new here. His is like an act repeated. One thought
Prabhu would fit 'circuit' ('Vatti' here), but he's been wasted, the role toned down.
Coming out fairly well is Prakashraj as the Dean, and Nagesh as Kamal's father. Arun fits the cameo of the dejected lover, while Jayasurya over-acts as the cancer patient. Looking lovely in same elegant suitable dresses and sarees is
Sneha.
The script didn't really require any songs, so too much was not expected of
Bharadwaj either. 'Munnabhai...' was a laugh-riot, 'Vasoolraja...' hardly tickles!
