Manorama meets CM

Actress Manorama'Aachi' Manorama, the Guinness record-holder for being the only actor in the world to have featured in more than 1,000 movies, recently met the Tamil Nadu chief minister and patron of the film industry, Kalaignar. The veteran actress met Kalaignar to take up an issue in the public interest and discussed the subject matter in detail with the latter.

Manorama had reportedly carried many 'press clippings' of news of the ever-increasing number of divorce cases that have been milling up in Family Courts in Chennai and other cities. "People tend to hide the 'truth' and marry off their impotent and HIV-infected grooms to unsuspecting and hapless girls. It's always the girls' families which get affected to a great extent, for they usually spend lakhs of rupees on their daughters' marriage only to see it getting ruined by the wrong choice of grooms," is the content of the petition that Manorama submitted to the chief minister.

The petition submitted by the actress-par-excellence went on to say that, "In order to mitigate the untold sufferings of thousands of families of these helpless girls, the government should enact a law stipulating that presenting a 'no objection certificate' from a RMP stating that both the bride and groom had no contagious/sexually transmitted diseases and are fit to lead normal familial lives is mandatory for the marriage to be solemnized at the temple/church/mosque/marriage halls."

Achi, you are great! This is one of the very serious issues faced by the society today. The statistics show that number of divorces have been increasing like an epidemic in India particularly in Tamilnadu. The reason is mainly the independence of women. When the woman becomes independent they find our existing family system is a liability and in the next opportunity they get a divorce from her husband. Whither our society goes!

Welcome step by Manorama, but will the buck stop by just handing over a petition? It will be interesting to see what the state government actually does in this regard.

Senthil you can not call me a victimiser when your response starts with "not sure". My point is a person taking up a social cause should be free of so called " Caste feeling". He or she cannot support or sympathize with a " caste" and take up the social issue. Hope you are clear now. If you are "not sure" yet read about Ms.Manorama carrying "paal kudam" on a particular day.

Hopefully she does not use this platform to go into politics. Her actions are most welcome and should be supported.

Since I do not know about the prevailing social structure in Tamil Nadu, will it not be better if Ms.Manorama register a Charity Organization or form an Ashram in liaison with recognized Swamis or Yogis and render assistance to the unsuspecting and hapless girls. I feel such a step would have the force of overcoming all barriers that stand on her way.

Not sure what SK is blabbering about and am not sure if you would react the same way if SK's family is victimised the same way. It is true and her thoughts are valid. Looks like SK is a victimiser. Rather than waiting for the govt., there are labs in chennai like Lister which do a special pre-marital test to check the physical compatability of the groom and bride. Why not get them done?

This is what Kushboo was involved in the controversy. She said girls usually have sex before marriage. Now Manorama is telling about boys. Will the valiant tamil community which revolted against the North Indian Kushboo revolt against Manorama also? Or will they keep quiet thinking that tamil to tamil insult is acceptable.

Excellent attempt by Aachi Manorama. Girls' parents will definitely welcome this. Popular cinema artists should handle issues of human interest and social awakening, like Aachi Manorama, which will add publicity to the core issue. Most of us are self-centered in social issues and we are ready to talk with even our neighbours, only if it is beneficial to us. Keep it up Manorama!

Funny!!. Social activist!!. She can not take social issues as long as she gets involved in her " CASTE" functions. She will not be accepted by society as a social worker. Wake up Tamil society.
