Kalakka
Povathu Yaaru, the third season of the hunt for the comedy king
airing on Vijay TV Fridays at 10 p.m., recently concluded in a
gala manner. In its earlier seasons, the show was a springboard
for many aspiring youngsters who have never faced an audience or
even had a stage performance. For them, it has been a remarkable
turn as they have got their break into the film world by means
of this popular show.
After searching high and low in Puducherry
and five cities across the state, that is Chennai, Coimbatore,
Salem, Madurai and Tirunelveli, 40 contestants were chosen to
face the Rs 5 lakh challenge. Judged by popular comedian S Ve
Sekar and the talented and glamorous Uma Riyaz Khan, the show
witnessed for the first time women stand-up comedy performers
vying for the title. The contestants performed stand-up comedy
with exceptional mimicry of some of the popular artistes of the
Tamil film industry.
After many rounds of stiff
competition, five finalists S S Saravanan, Magendran, Sangeeta,
Siva Karthikeyan and Deepan were chosen. In the wild card round
which saw 10 eliminated contestants come back into the
competition to compete for the two spots in the finale;
Dhanasekar and Gokulnath were the winners.
In the grande finale, the
evergreen comedy performer, a woman who has entertained
audiences with her great timing for decades, Manorama, joined
the judges panel as a special jury.
And the winner of this third
season of Kalakka Povathu Yaar 3 was Siva Karthikeyan, hailing
from Tiruchirapalli. He is currently pursuing his MBA degree in
Chennai. A talented mimicry artiste, he outdid all his earlier
performances; in the finals one of his acts was a conversation
between a bus driver and the passengers; each of the characters
were voices of popular actors. And his second act was also a
mimicry performance on what Tamil actors would have done if they
hadn't joined filmdom.
As the third season concludes,
the KPY series continues as the best performers continue in
Kalakka Povathu Champions which starts right after the grand
finale.
Kalakka Povadhu Champions-3
begins from August 3, 2007, airing every Friday at 10 p.m. The
next season also has S Ve Sekar and Uma Riyaz as the judges and
will be hosted by popular mimicry artistes Sethu and Ramya who
host Vijay TV's King Queen Jack. Performers like Siva
Karthikeyan, Saravanan, Shanmugaraj, Rajan and a few others who
have acquired an identity with their performance in KPY 3 are
set to showcase their talent in Champions as well.
