Mega
TV, a new Tamil satellite television channel, has been floated
by the family of a Congress MP from Tamil Nadu with an aim to
propagate the ideology of the Congress, nationalism and national
development.
The TV channel would start
telecasting from August 20, the birth anniversary of the late
prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, former Union Minister and Congress
MP, K V Thangabalu, said in Chennai.
His wife, Jayanthi Thangabalu,
would be the chairperson of the Silverstar Communications, his
family-owned company.
"The TV's programmes would help
to wean away youth from western culture and inculcate Tamil
culture besides establishing the rights of women," he said.
Asked whether there was any
scope for yet another channel in the already overcrowded Tamil
satellite channel world, he said there was scope for more TV
channels as the state stood first among TV-viewing audience.
Mega TV would be a free-to-air
24-hour entertainment and news channel, he said, adding, ISRO's
INSAT 2B would be used for beaming the programmes.
He refused to disclose the
investment that had gone into the venture. (Agencies)
