Murugan Idli Shop
Where: G N Chetty Road, T Nagar
What you get: South Indian Tiffin
As you walk into Murugan Idli Shop, one of the first things that you probably would see will be yourself. There are a whole lot of mirrors. Cool, I think. I never checked out how I looked whilst I ate;)
Murugan Idli Shop was first started by Shanmugasundaram and his wife on a Madurai street 35 years ago. As far as Chennai is concerned, the shop is less than a year young.
No prizes for having guessed that their speciality is
idli. The proprietor, Manoharan, says that the idlis (Rs 4.50 a piece) are made of a very special variety of rice. The best part of the idlis is actually the accompaniments. They serve four types of
chutneys and sambar. You can ask for oil and podi, which come at an extra cost. Or
butter to go along.
The other specialties are onion oothappam, made of small onion (chinna vengayam) and
venn pongal. Another item on the menu that the proprietor boasts of is the
chakkara pongal. He says you can’t find a better
pongal than his at any other place.
Needless to say, the outlet is teeming with people, from when they open at 7 a.m. till 11 p.m. Don’t come in here wishing for privacy or a quiet atmosphere or hope to have a table to yourself.
The outlet at G N Chetty road has both A/C and non-A/C sections wherein if you choose to seat yourself in the non-A/C section, your idlis will come 50 paise lesser than the ones served in the A/C section.
A good place to go to have a good tiffin, served fast. Their takeaways are not as fast though. The time you spend waiting for one, you might as well have it served.
Murugan Idli Shop now has a fully air-conditioned branch at North Usman Road.
