Saravana Bhavan
Where: In 21 locations and more in Chennai city
What you get: North Indian and South Indian food
Saravana Bhavan needs no write up on their chain of
hotels. But if you still clicked on this link just to see why I chose to write about a hugely renowned food chain known to almost half of the world, I dare say that it might not have been in vain as I could write about facts you previously did not know of.
Saravana Bhavan was started in 1982, at K K Nagar; by a grocery merchant named Rajagopalan who decided to cater food on a small scale. Maybe here was the man who had introduced the culture of eating out in a highly conservative Chennai. The biography of Mr. Rajagopalan, which is called “Vetri Meedhu Aasai Veithen”, is written in English and Tamil and is available at the Mylapore branch of Saravana
Bhavan.
The A/C hotels of Saravana Bhavan serve both
North and South Indian cuisine, and the non A/C ones serve only South Indian varieties. The hotels open at 5 am in the morning and close at 11 pm at night.
The branch manager at T Nagar, Mr. Swaminathan believes that the specialty of Saravana Bhavan is their
coffee, meals and
tiffin. You could take away your food if you don’t want to eat at the premises.
Saravana Bhavan now has 2 outlets each in Delhi and Kanchipuram, and one in Vellore. Abroad you will find Saravana Bhavan at USA, Dubai, Canada,
Malaysia and Singapore. The NRSI’s (Non Resident South Indians) are blessing them.
Coming to what we ate at SB we stuck to plain
Dosa and coffee. It was a welcome change of eating pure south Indian food after a while. Great food, very easy on the pocket and no compromise on quality.
That’s Saravana Bhavan for you.
