Pon Onam at Taj Connemara

Bright and colourful Pookklalam and a big, well-lit brass lamp decorated with flowers greet you at the entrance of the thatched Kerala type hut. And as you walk into the hut, also decorated with flowers, you instantly sense the warm and festive spirit of Onam descend upon you. Welcome to the Raintree at the Taj Connemara! The Chettinad specialty restaurant at the hotel will be celebrating Onam by hosting an Onam Food Festival between September 5 to September 14, 2003. The 10-day dinner festival will be a true celebration of the festive spirit of the harvest festival.

According to R Pashupathy, General Manager, Taj Connemara, “Onam is one of the most important and anticipated of South Indian festivals at the Taj Connemara. Given the sizeable number of Malayalees and the Keralite influence in Chennai, we decided to celebrate the festival in its true spirit by hosting a special festival. Though the Onam Sadhya will be the highlight of the festival, the festival will also showcase its other aspects. The spirit of Onam is the essence of the festival.”

The look and feel of the place is well coordinated. The thoranam, aana (elephant) statues, the banana trees, KTC posters, all add to the mood of the festival. Added to this are the staff, attired in the traditional veshti and jibba and a streak of chandanam on their foreheads, looking unmistakably Malayalee!

Given that the Onam Sadhya is the most important aspect of the festival, the restaurant has taken special efforts to ensure that guests get to savour the delicacies of authentic and delicious sadhya. Chefs from Taj Residency, Ernakulam were flown in specially for the festival. They have whipped up an exceptional menu featuring all the Onam specialties. Aviyal, olan, inchi curry, pazham pachadi, shakaravaratti, ada paradhaman, pal payasam are some of the specialties on the menu.

Apart from this performances by professionals in Kaikottikkali, Mohiniattam, Kathakali and flute recitals will keep guests entertained as they relish their sadhya.

Come and celebrate the spirit of Onam by partaking in the festivities at the Raintree.
