Legend has
it that in China, a beggar was stranded in the midst of the desert with a piece of chicken in his hand. After wrapping it in a dry lotus leaf and covering it with clay, he placed it in the hole which he had dug and soon the meat was baked. A hungry minister came across this piece of meat and was so delighted by its taste, that he popularized this recipe in his province of Xing Jiang and was known as “Beggars Chicken”. For the first time in Chennai, the Taj coromandel hotel is hosting a Xin Jiang festival at the “Golden Dragon” restaurant from May 24 to June 15, 2003.
Speaking to the chef Mr. Cheung Sing Sun, we came to know that the beggar’s chicken is a sought-after dish in China, especially in Xin Jiang, where Muslims of that particular region are very fond of the dish. He also added that this is the first time in Chennai that “Beggar’s Chicken” is being authentically prepared.
Regarding its taste, he answered that people who taste it once would definitely like to order for another. So get ready to visit hotel Taj Coromandel and order your “Beggar’s Chicken” right away - only at “Golden Dragon’ restaurant.
