Variety fare at ‘Residency’

 Food

Tasteful is the word to describe both the refurbished ‘Residency’ one of the most popular restaurants in Hotel Park Sheraton Towers, Chennai, and its cuisine. The first is a tasteful facelift while the second is testimony to the established standards of the restaurant.

On entering the restaurant one is encountered by an exclusive lounge housing comfortable sofas where guests can wait for their table or for other guests to join them for lunch or dinner. The guests can have their choice of drinks served in the lounge while waiting. There is an intricately carved gate leading to the main dining area. The tables are comfortably spaced and the place is quite well lit.

The interiors are done in soft pastel shades with the entire place being given a ballroom kind of look. The table is laid the fine dining style. There is a choice of an extensive buffet offered for lunch which carries Indian, Continental and Chinese cuisine with an array of desserts on offer. The dinner has on offer a-la-carte menu with Continental, Indian and Chinese cuisine for the guests to choose from.

When you are talking about entertaining guests for lunch or dinner as part of a business agenda then this is the place to be. Presuming your platter is already laden with a full business agenda then buffets can be a life saver, the restaurant has a lot of corporates coming in for a quick meal at the buffet. While during the lunch the restaurant wears a conventional look the entire place gets transformed during the night with a live band playing and dinner served by the candlelight. The guests even have the option of asking for their choice of music to be played on request.

The continental menu is a selection of popular dishes. The appetizers and soups have Jamaican Prawn Cocktail which is prawn in thousand island dressing fortified with rum, Asparagus Spears which contains asparagus chilled, with vinaigrette dressing to name a few. Among the soups there is a selection of Swiss cheese soup, a clear chicken broth with cheese croutons, Minestrone Genoese a unique vegetable and pasta soup, flavoured with a basil and nut pesto.

Coming to the Vegetarian and Salad section, there is a variety of Corn and Spinach Augratin, sweet corn with fresh spinach cooked in Béchamel sauce, topped with cheddar cheese and gratinated, Vegetable Sizzler which is an assorted vegetable speciality served on a sizzler and Aegean Salad has cucumber, tomato, onion with home made cheese and garlic yoghurt dressing to name a few keeps the vegetarians asking for more.

Among the non-vegetarian dishes there are sea foods, poultry and meat to choose from. There is tasty Prawns Dumas, sautéed prawns simmered in Demi-glace and tomato served with herbed potatoes, King Fish Steak, Lasagna Pasticciate to name a few.

The Indian menu boasts of sheer variety offering a delectable fare for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. The menu consists of superb starters like Alu Moong Chaat and Chicken Chaat among others. The main course has Paneer Kurchan, Achari Gobi, Dal Maharani and Aatish - E - Jhinga, Tandoori Murgh, Subz Seekh from the tandoor(food cooked in the special clay oven in the heat of burning charcoal) among others.

There are also Macher Amritsari, Bater Khada Masala, Saag Gosht to name a few. There is also on offer a wide variety of rice and Indian breads like the veritable Hyderabadi Biryani, Jeera Mattar Pulao, Paratha, Roomali Roti and a selection of naan to choose from. To wrap up the meal on a sweet note, there is tantalizing Kashmiri Phirnee, Kulfi and Shahi Tukda to name a few.

The Chinese menu in Residency offers one of the most authentic Chinese food. The appetizers have Crispy Chicken and Gin Dumplings, Squid Salt and Pepper, Golden Fried Baby Corn and Crispy Vegetable Wontons to name a few. The are some unique soups like Shark Fin and Crab meat soup, Zha-Cai Chicken soup, Golden Mushroom Hot Garlic soup among others. The main course is an extensive affair with a wide variety of seafood, poultry, tenderloin, pork and vegetarian dishes vying with each other. There is also a choice of rice and noodles like Beijing Chao Fan rice with Prawn/Chicken/vegetable, Shang-Dong Fried rice, Pan Fried Noodles, Sichuan Noodles and some more.

The dessert comprises Mee Gung, sweet flat noodles with honey and sesame or Sweet Bean Dumpling or Fried Lychees to name a few all of which are served with a scoop of ice cream.

Lunch is served by the buffet between 12.30 p.m. to 2.45 p.m. and dinner carries a splendid a la carte menu between 7.30 p.m. and 11.45 p.m.

A visit to the Residency keeps the guest going back for more.
