The Spice village in Chennai - Nuts and Spices

Food

The Sanklecha family has been in the business for the past 50 years when their ancestors started their first outfit in Georgetown. The fifth generation of the family is managing 'Nuts and Spices' a 650 sq. ft. shop, a haven for people who are not contented with the supermarket spices of substandard quality. You no longer need to travel all the way to Georgetown to get good quality spices.

Spices from Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, China, nuts from Iran and Oman and herbs from Italy, all this and much more are now available in our own Chennai. Nuts and Spices is an exclusive shop which houses all kinds of dry foods and spices from around the globe. Apart from these they also have non-alcoholic beer from Germany and chocolates from Switzerland.

N&S also has jams, squashes, preservatives and syrups in never before flavours like black current, blueberry, strawberry, orange and wild berry. Their spice dry fruits and nut list go beyond the cloves and elaichi. They stock black cardomom, anasi pu, nutmeg, dry ginger, omam seeds, china grass, poppy seeds, figs, apricots, walnuts, pista, Italian herbs, Hongkong figs, Californian purnes, pure safforn, figs from Iran, almonds from California, a special nut variety from Iran called Chilgoza and Spanish olives. Spices are not sold loose, but small packets ranging from 50gms are also available.

Alprose, Goldring, and Stella are some of the chocolate brands that they have from Switzerland. An impressive range of squashes from places like Panchagani and special dry fruit squashes from Calcutta are also available. You can also pick up their chocolate cookies, yummy chocolate fudge, fruit jellys, biscuits from England and Danish cookies.

Sunil Sanklecha, the owner says," We change our products on the shelves every fortnight. So you will not find any product in less than perfect condition." Nuts and Spices was opened on 16th of June and within six months has a 75% repeat clientele. "People come from all around the city and even from places like Thiruvamiyur and beyond," says Sunil.

Plans are afoot in making Nuts and Spices as chain stores all round the city and to open one in Adayar in the immediate future. Free home delivery is being offered for purchases above Rs.500 and a major chunk of their customers are corporates who buy dry fruits assorted arrangements as gifts and compliments.

Nuts and Spices is at 34-B, Mahathma Gandhi Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai-34. Phone - 8268180, 8278797.
