Is Yoga a part of Ayurveda? Of course, yes.
Yoga has been mentioned as Shaddarsana - six visions. Having seen the short span of life and limited intelligence of men, the earlier rishis have given us an extra vision to analyse and understand all the aspects of the Veda .This extra vision is called
Shaddarsana.
These are called Sankya, Nyaya, Vaiseshika, Yoga, Karma, Meemamsa and
Utharameemamsa.
In this Yoga philosophy has been given by Pathanjali
Maharishi.
The word Yoga means ‘yug annena ithi yoga’ - one which unites you. This can be to unite your body and mind or unite the universal self with the individual self or unification of indriya (sense organ) with mind or unification of jeevathma with paramathma.
To attain this there are 8 branches called astanga of Yoga.
YAMA (Do’s)
NIYAMA (Don’ts)
ASANA (Postures)
PRANAYAMA (Breathing Control)
PRATHYAHARA (Abstinence)
DHARANA (Concentration)
DHYANA (Meditation)
SAMADI (Unification)
Unfortunately, today this yogic science is snatched from vedic people and reduced to physical fitness exercise. To understand vedic Yoga, see the next article.
