Other than philosophy, now we will discuss some practical
aspects of Ayurveda which will be useful for the day-to-day
maintenance of health. The first and foremast concept is
Prakrthi (natural body and mind constitution). According to
Ayurveda, every individual, when conceived in the mother’s womb
itself, will be characterised with some natural body and mind
disposition - this is defined as Prakrithi. So it is very
important to understand this natural trait of an individual to
adjust his aahara - diet - and vihara - activity to maintain
robust health.
In the previous articles we found the importance of
Dinacharya
(daily regime) and Ritucharya (seasonal regime) to maintain
health in a healthy individual. When one specifically
understands their Prakrithi, then only they will be able to
choose their diet and routines perfectly.
Different from the modern way of diet chart
and calorie burning, Ayurveda charts out diet and activity by
keeping in mind the constitutional difference of an individual.
This Prakrithi – constitution - is broadly of
three types: Vatha Prakrithi, Pittha Prakrithi and Kapha
prakrithi. But when we deeply consider it, it can be a dual
constitution also lastly the combination of all the three traits
of vata, pitta and kapha.
Now initially let us see the single
constitution like vata, pitta and kapha.
Features of Vathika constitution
Scanty hair, thin body structure, dry skin
and cracks in palms and sole, small, curved and split nail,
talkative, unstable mind, quick in movements, easily irritable,
ungrateful to others, hands and legs having prominent vein. They
always have dreams like walking on air or sky. They love music.
These characters will have fewer friends and
naturally acquire little wealth.
Ayurveda correlates these characters with
traits of the goat, jackal, rabbit, mouse, dog, vulture, crow or
an ass.
