Emergency care at Central station

The Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre (SRMC) is providing round-the-clock emergency services at the Central Station in Chennai -- for the first time in the history of Indian Railways. A state-of-the-art Medical Assistance Booth of SRMC was inaugurated at the Central Station in Chennai.

The booth is a two-storeyed structure with facilities for immediate resuscitation of all types of emergencies. The services are provided by doctors and paramedics who have been specially trained in accident and emergency care. Instead of nearly functioning as a first-aid centre, immediate acute care for all medical emergencies are provided. A well-equipped ambulance is on stand-by to transport critically ill patients to the hospital.

Services available round-the-clock are:

  • Mobile advanced cardiac life support

  • Assessment and treatment of minor, acute and significant medical problems

  • Ambulance services to rush the patient to the hospital

  • Online consultation with specialists at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre

  • Automatic external defibrillation to save precious minutes

A unique feature of the Medical Assistance Booth is the facility for immediate online consultation for complex problems with specialists at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre. A computerized electrocardiogram can be read online by experts located at the hospital and immediate advice can be given to the doctor who is present at the booth.

A great majority of heart attack victims die before help can reach them. Time is critical as many cardiac arrests become fatal 4-7 minutes after the attack occurs. It is estimated that Sudden Cardiac Arrests (SCA) occur more than 600 times a day across the country. Each year several lakh lives are lost due to timely help. Taking all this into consideration, SRMC has come up with the novel idea of setting up a medical booth at the Chennai Railway Station, to offer immediate help to the public in times of emergency.

The doctors and paramedics in the booth are trained and well-equipped to handle anything from a minor injury or illness to a major ailment. The Medical Assistance Booth will be a boon to railway passengers, providing round-the-clock emergency care.

The inauguration of Medical Assistance Booth at the Central Station is bound to usher in a new paradigm in healthcare delivery to railway passengers. Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre’s motto is to provide innovative and high quality healthcare to all sections of the society, said its spokesman adding that with this in mind, SRMC has taken up this unique initiative in the arena of healthcare to serve the people.
