 The Madras Medical Mission
(MMM) and the Government of Tanzania have signed an MoU whereby patients from
Tanzania will be treated at the Chennai-based hospital for three years. The patients, including adults and children,
would be treated for cardiac and cardio-vascular diseases, kidney and liver transplants and infertility management
and women’s health.
The MoU also envisages a plan of referral of patients’ follow-up and feedback mechanism. MMM will help the
Ministry of Health prepare a training programme for medical doctors and other paramedical personnel from Tanzania
by providing specialists from MMM in India and onsite in Tanzania (if required).
Till date, Tanzania has sent 216 adult and 232 paediatric patients for treatment of various complex surgeries. MMM
was the preferred hospital because the success rate was a staggering 99 per cent.
MMM has been providing total heartcare services to patients from 26 countries, such as Bahrain, Kenya, Malaysia,
Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania, UAE and Uganda. A total of 3,000 patients have so far
been successfully treated, and they include babies, children and adults.
K V George, secretary, MMM, after signing the MoU, said this was a singular honour for the hospital and they were
proud that it was the only one chosen by the Tanzanian government after the delegation visited and inspected
facilities of important hospitals in India. M J Mwaffisi, permanent secretary, The United Republic of Tanzania, signed
on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Government of Tanzania.
The Tanzanian delegation spent time sharing the experiences of the 20-odd patients from Tanzania who are
currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
