The state-of-the-art Medical Assistance Booth of
SRMC at Central Station in Chennai has saved the lives of two passengers who suffered severe cardiac arrest and would perhaps have died but for the timely medical attention.
Two passengers, waiting for their long-distance travel, encountered the trauma of severe chest pain and sweating recently. They were rushed to the
SRMC medical booth where the emergency physician and paramedics treated them. After making sure that they were stable, they were taken to the hospital for further treatment and were discharged after three days.
These two cases clearly stress the importance of timely diagnosis and medical intervention that is necessary to help people and avoid unnecessary deaths.
SRMC positions its emergency physicians and paramedics at the booth round-the-clock. The centre is stocked with all life-saving medicines. Also available is an ambulance on alert to transfer the patients to the nearest hospital after the condition of the patient has been stabilised.
Services available round-the-clock are:
-
Mobile, advanced cardiac life support;
-
Assessment and treatment of minor, acute and significant medical problems;
-
Ambulance services to rush the patient to the hospital;
-
Online consultation with specialists at Sri Ramachandra Medical
Centre;
-
Automatic external defibrillation to save precious minutes
The booth is a two-storeyed structure with facilities for immediate resuscitation during all types of emergencies. It has been functioning for over a year at Central Station, which is used by over three lakh people for transit.
Doctors and paramedics who have been specially trained in accident and emergency care provide the services. Instead of merely functioning as a first-aid centre, immediate acute care for all medical emergencies is provided. "Our effort is to provide care that is timely as well as sophisticated," said Dr T V Ramakrishnan, department of accident and emergency medicine.
A unique feature of the booth is the facility for immediate online consultation for complex problems with specialists at the
Sri Ramachandra Medical
Centre. Experts located at the hospital can read a computerised electrocardiogram online and immediate advice can be given to the doctor who is present at the booth, Dr Ramakrishnan added.
