Towards better nursing


The inauguration ceremony of the 32nd national, 10-day course on 'Management Techniques and Clinical Updates for Nursing Administrators' took place at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC & RI) Deemed University (DU) on July 19. 

The conference is being organised in association with the Indian Society of Health Administrators (ISHA), a Bangalore-based NGO, at the SRMC premises till July 28.

Inaugurating the course, Prof Dr S Thanikachalam, Vice-Chancellor of SRMC & RI (DU) stressed the importance of management techniques and clinical updates and he was confident that this seminar would enhance the ability of nursing administrators.

In his keynote address, Prof Dr K V Somasundaram, dean of faculties, SRMC, had elaborated the following objectives of the course, which would be dealt with in detail by eminent faculties of SRMC during the course:

* To become aware of the latest clinical updates in nursing care; and modern management techniques in nursing administration
* To become aware of the needs of the patients and factors contributing to patient satisfaction and quality assurance
* To learn techniques of effective nursing management and develop skills in becoming an effective administrator
* To learn techniques of introducing change in health institutions for patient satisfaction, quality assurance and hospital productivity

The SRMC, established under the Sri Ramachandra Educational and Health Trust, a private not-for-profit self-financing institution, in 1985, is dedicated to serve society as a centre for excellence with emphasis on medical education, research and healthcare. In view of its excellence, the Government of India granted the status of Deemed University to SRMC under the provisions of the UGC Act, 1956. 

The ISHA, established in 1979, under the Karnataka Societies Act, 1960, is a premier professional association with over 5,000 professionals, scientists and administrators as individual members. Over 300 national institutions, public sector industrial organisations, professional bodies, health and medical departments of state governments are institutional members. ISHA organises annual conferences, conducts training programmes, conducts action-oriented research and provides consultancy services to establish new health institutions and improve management and organisational systems. ISHA has 20 regional offices, nearly 200 resource faculty involved in training and research projects.

The course will extensively cover topics like macro aspects of health and nursing care:

  • Knowing the self;

  • Role of nursing personnel;

  • Understanding patients, patient satisfaction and quality assurance;

  • Counselling and health;

  • Infection control and burn management; managing critical patients;

  • Administration of nursing care; and

  • Professional development of nurses.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by nursing students and nurses from various institutions and hospitals.
