Tourism-healthcare package

Medical tourism has taken an all-new avatar over the last few months. The influx of patients from across the world for super-speciality treatment available at one-fourth the cost has surely put India on the healthcare map. The government is working towards highlighting the medical benefits available in the state among the international and domestic tourists.

The Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has taken the lead in introducing the medical advantages of the state to all tourists. The TTDC has joined hands with Apollo Hospitals, one of the leading healthcare service provider in Asia, headquartered in Chennai, to launch the travellers privilege coupon, the ‘Apollo Hospitals–TTDC Preventive Health Care Package’.

Aadi Rajaram, chairman, TTDC, Shaktikanta Das, managing director, TTDC and commissioner – Tourism, along with Preetha Reddy, managing director, Apollo Hospitals Group, George Eapen, CEO, Apollo Hospitals, and Ashok Ananthram, president – Business Development, Apollo Hospitals, together launched the preventive healthcare package at the Tamilnadu Tourism Complex.

Aadi Rajaram said, “From traditional medical expertise to current hi-tech medical treatments, Tamil Nadu is blessed with the best. This is one of our initial programmes in our efforts to promote India in general and Tamil Nadu in particular as the preferred healthcare destination.” The Apollo group would have a special place in the hearts of the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu as this was the hospital which saved the life of MGR in 1984 and ensured that he was alive and could function as chief minister till 1987, he added.

Shaktikanta Das said, “Our association with healthcare institutes such as Apollo Hospitals will definitely prove valuable to our tourists as they can now look forward to not only visiting some of the most enchanting tourist destinations but also taking home with them the advantages of preventive health check-up. We are sure that we can take our association with Apollo Hospitals a long way to make this city and state one of the premier destinations for all tourists.”

He hoped that the traffic inflow into the state would show considerable increase with the help of packages like the one introduced by the Apollo group. Similar packages were being explored with other hospitals, he added.

The Apollo Hospitals–TTDC Preventive Health Care Package enables all tourists availing any of the TTDC tour packages to get a 15 per cent discount on the Apollo Preventive Health Check. The preventive health check can be conducted in any of the Apollo Hospitals or clinics spread across the country at the special discount rate. The travellers' privilege coupon comes along with the ticket purchased for any of the tours organised by TTDC.

A detailed write-up in the tickets lists the importance of preventive healthcare and enables tourists to understand the Apollo preventive health check-up advantage. Contact details of the Apollo Hospitals and clinics are also provided.

Preetha Reddy commented, “Health and medical tourism are becoming the fastest growing segments in the country. Today, the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and the various state tourism boards have understood the tremendous potential of this segment and are developing plans that would benefit the economy as a whole.”

She added, “As one of the leading healthcare institutes in the country we have formulated strategies that will not only benefit the international patients coming to the country but also extend the advantages to our domestic tourists. Our joint efforts with TTDC are focused towards introducing tourists coming into the state to the fine art of living healthy. We are keen to design and develop more comprehensive healthcare packages to promote health tourism within the state.”

Preetha Reddy said the group would be willing to consider a treatment package as well for tourists so as to promote tourism in the state. Although Apollo has a network of hospitals all over the country, it would give priority to tourism promotion efforts in Tamil Nadu as it owed its origin and growth to the people of the state, she added.

The latest travellers privilege coupon comes along with the tickets tourists buy for any tours organised by TTDC. To begin with, these coupons can be purchased at either the Tamilnadu Tourism Complex in Wallajah Road or the TTDC counter at EVR Salai. The discount has no time limit and can be availed of at any of the Apollo Hospitals or clinics on producing the ticket.
